What Are the Safest Cleaning Products for Asthma?

The short answer

The safest setup is fragrance-free liquid or foam products applied to a cloth rather than sprayed, plus microfibre and ventilation, with disinfectants reserved for a real reason. Research links frequent spray use to higher asthma risk, and the trigger spray format is the part you can change today at no cost.

What are the safest cleaning products for asthma?

Fragrance-free liquids and foams, applied to a cloth and wiped, with microfibre doing the mechanical work and a window open. That is the whole answer, and the most important word in it is not “fragrance-free”. It is “cloth”.

Nothing here is medical advice, and we are not qualified to give any. Asthma triggers are individual, and the person who should tell you what yours are is your doctor or respiratory therapist. What a cleaning company can usefully tell you is what the exposure research says about products and application methods, and which of those variables you actually control.

The three levers, roughly in order of how much they matter:

  1. Format. Trigger sprays put product into your breathing zone as an aerosol. Cloths do not.
  2. Fragrance. Scent adds airborne compounds and adds nothing to how clean the surface is.
  3. Disinfectant use. Reserve it for a reason instead of running it daily across the whole house.

Product brand is the fourth lever, and it matters less than people expect.

What does the research actually say about cleaning and the lungs?

Two large studies do most of the work here, and both need reporting carefully, because both are routinely mangled online.

Svanes 2018. Researchers followed 6,235 people from the European Community Respiratory Health Survey for more than 20 years, with repeated spirometry, mean age 34 at enrolment. Compared with women who did not clean, women who cleaned at home showed FEV1 declining about 3.6 mL per year faster and FVC about 4.3 mL per year faster. Women working as occupational cleaners declined about 3.9 mL per year faster on FEV1 and 7.1 mL per year on FVC. No association was found in men, which the authors attribute in part to how few male professional cleaners were in the cohort.

The line everyone repeats comes from the authors themselves. In the press summary that accompanied publication, the accelerated decline in occupational cleaners was described as comparable to smoking somewhat less than 20 pack-years. That is the study authors’ comparison, describing more than two decades of professional cleaning work. It is not our claim, and it is not a statement about someone wiping a kitchen counter on a Saturday. We are stating it because it is theirs and it is sourced, not because we would put it on a van.

Zock 2007. An earlier ECRHS analysis followed 3,503 adults who did the cleaning in their own homes and were free of asthma at baseline. Those using cleaning sprays at least weekly, which was 42% of participants, had a relative risk of incident asthma symptoms or medication of 1.49 (95% CI 1.12 to 1.99) and of wheeze of 1.39 (95% CI 1.06 to 1.80). Those using sprays at least four days a week had a relative risk of physician-diagnosed asthma of 2.11 (95% CI 1.15 to 3.89). There was a dose response for both frequency of use and number of different sprays used.

Both of these are observational cohorts. They show association across large populations over long periods. They do not prove that a given bottle caused a given person’s asthma, and neither study claims that. The authors of the spray study estimated that cleaning-product exposure could account for as much as 15%, roughly one in seven, of adult asthma cases, and that is an author estimate rather than a measured value.

For context on the occupational side, systematic analyses put the share of adult asthma attributable to workplace exposure somewhere in the range of 10% to 17.6%, with cleaning consistently among the higher-risk occupational groups. Give the range, not a single figure.

Why does the spray format matter so much?

Because the exposure is inhaled, and a trigger spray is a device for turning liquid into something inhalable at face height.

This is the most useful, most actionable and least expensive finding in the whole literature, and it is why we lead with it. In the Zock cohort, risk was concentrated in glass-cleaning, furniture and air-freshening sprays. Those three have something in common beyond chemistry: they are used at chest and head height, often in a small room, and the plume drifts back into the user’s breathing zone.

Spray the cloth, not the air. Two or three pumps onto a folded microfibre cloth, then wipe. The surface gets the same product, the same dwell time and the same result. You get a small fraction of the aerosol. It takes no longer, costs nothing, and works with whatever is already under your sink.

Where a sprayed application is genuinely needed, such as a disinfectant that requires a wetted surface for a stated contact time, the adjustments are: spray low and close, spray with the window open, use a foaming or stream setting rather than a fine mist if the trigger offers one, and leave the room while it dwells.

The fair caveat: the finding that risk clustered in spray categories is solid; “so use a cloth” is a reasonable inference from it rather than a tested intervention. It is still the best free advice available.

Which ingredients should someone with asthma avoid?

Fragrance first, then disinfectant actives, then anything you were about to mix.

Fragrance. In Steinemann’s cross-national surveys, 57.8% of people with asthma reported adverse effects from fragranced products, including respiratory problems in 43.3%, migraine in 28.2% and asthma attacks in 27.9%. Among all adults, 15.7% reported health problems simply from being in a room cleaned with scented products. These are self-reported symptoms from population surveys rather than clinical diagnoses, so read them as “a large share of asthmatic people report reacting”, not as a diagnostic rate. Health Canada’s own Healthy Home Guide tells Canadians to “minimize the use of scented products, such as plug-in or aerosol deodorizers (air fresheners)”, because they hide odours by producing VOCs.

Quaternary ammonium compounds (quats). Benzalkonium chloride and its relatives are the active in a large share of disinfectant sprays and wipes. Quats can cause occupational asthma in exposed individuals, confirmed by specific challenge testing showing increased bronchial hyperresponsiveness and an eosinophilic airway response consistent with immunological sensitisation. Be fair about the other side: a 2019 methodological review argued much of the population-level human research on quats suffers from exposure misclassification and mixed exposures, so the size of the population risk is genuinely disputed. The honest position is that quats demonstrably sensitise some individuals, which is reason enough to not run them across a whole house every day.

Anything mixed. Health Canada is blunt: “Never mix household chemical products together. Some mixtures, such as bleach and ammonia, can produce harmful gases.” Bleach plus ammonia gives chloramine gas, bleach plus any acid gives chlorine gas, and neither is a hypothetical in a bathroom with two bottles in it.

A useful shortcut for shopping. Green Seal’s GS-37 standard prohibits products formulated with asthmagens, along with carcinogens, mutagens, reproductive toxins, phthalates, formaldehyde donors and heavy metals, and it counts all fragrance components present at 0.01% or more toward the VOC limit. That specific exclusion is doing more work for an asthmatic household than any leaf on a bottle, because it was written down by a third party and can be checked.

A word against our own sector: “natural” is not the same as “safe for asthma”. A 2023 chamber study of 30 cleaning products detected 530 unique VOCs, of which 193 were classified as hazardous. Conventional products generally showed greater total concentrations, emission factors and numbers of VOCs than green ones, and fragrance-free products emitted the least of all. That study was conducted by researchers at the Environmental Working Group, an advocacy organisation, which we mention because you should know it. Earlier headspace work by Steinemann found essentially no difference between green and conventional products in the number of VOCs emitted, so the direction of that evidence is genuinely contested. What both bodies of work agree on is the fragrance-free end of the scale, which is why our recommendation is fragrance-free rather than natural. It is also why we list the low-VOC products we clean with by name.

How should you clean if someone in the house has asthma?

  • Apply to the cloth, never the air. The one rule to keep if you keep only one.
  • Go fragrance-free, and check that “unscented” on the label actually means that. It often does not, which we explain in fragrance-free versus unscented.
  • Ventilate during and for a while after. Open a window on the far side of the room so air moves through rather than sitting.
  • Let the person with asthma be elsewhere while the work happens, and for a bit afterwards. Exposure is highest during and immediately after.
  • Use microfibre and mechanical action rather than reaching for a stronger product.
  • Keep the disinfectant for a reason. Illness in the house, raw meat on a board, a bathroom after a stomach bug. Not the daily counter wipe.
  • Never mix products, and do not use two in sequence on the same wet surface.
  • Reduce dust as well as chemistry. Damp-wipe rather than dry-dust, since dry dusting redistributes particles rather than removing them.
  • Talk to your doctor about your own triggers before rearranging your household on the basis of a blog post, including this one.

The short version

The evidence linking cleaning to airway problems is observational, consistent, and mostly about how products are applied rather than which brand is on the bottle. Frequent spray use tracks with higher asthma risk in a dose-dependent way, fragrance is the component most people with asthma report reacting to, and the fix that costs nothing is to spray the cloth instead of the room. Where the authors of these studies drew a comparison with smoking, that comparison is theirs, it describes decades of occupational cleaning, and it should not be repeated as though it described an evening of tidying.

Do cleaning products cause asthma?

Large observational studies show an association, not proof of cause. Zock and colleagues found adults who used cleaning sprays at least weekly had a higher risk of developing asthma symptoms, with a dose response by frequency. That is strong enough to change how you clean and not strong enough to state as a causal fact.

Is cleaning really as bad as smoking?

That line belongs to the authors of the Svanes 2018 study, who described the accelerated lung-function decline they measured in occupational cleaners as comparable to smoking somewhat less than 20 pack-years. It describes 20-plus years of professional cleaning work, not wiping a counter, and it is their comparison rather than ours.

What is the single best change for an asthmatic household?

Stop spraying into the air. Apply the product to a cloth, then wipe. Most of the exposure from a trigger spray is inhaled aerosol, and the risk in the Zock study was concentrated in spray categories. It costs nothing and takes no extra time.

Are natural cleaning products better for asthma?

Better on average, not automatically safe. A 2023 chamber study found conventional products generally emitted more VOCs at higher concentrations than green ones, with fragrance-free products emitting least. But many natural cleaners are heavily scented with essential oils, which are terpene sources. Fragrance-free is the more defensible choice than natural.

Should I still use bleach or a disinfectant if someone has asthma?

Reserve disinfectants for a specific reason such as illness in the house or raw-meat contamination, rather than as a routine. Never mix them with anything. Health Canada's instruction is direct: never mix household chemical products together. Talk to your doctor or respiratory therapist about your own triggers.

Can I ask a cleaning company to work fragrance-free?

Yes, and a company that cannot tell you exactly which products it would use is telling you something. Ask for the product names, ask whether anything is sprayed into the air, and ask about ventilation during and after the visit.
