Which Cleaning Chemicals Should You Never Mix?
Never mix bleach with ammonia, which makes chloramine gas, or bleach with any acid including vinegar and toilet-bowl descalers, which makes chlorine gas. Health Canada's instruction is simply never to mix household chemical products. Vinegar plus baking soda is not dangerous, just useless once the fizzing stops.
Which combinations are actually dangerous?
Two reactions do almost all the harm, and both involve bleach. Health Canada states the rule without qualification in its Healthy Home Guide: “Never mix household chemical products together. Some mixtures, such as bleach and ammonia, can produce harmful gases.”
Bleach plus ammonia produces chloramine gas. Ammonia is in many glass cleaners, some floor cleaners, and in urine. Symptoms include watery eyes, nausea, coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain and irritation of the throat, nose and lungs. They can develop after only a few breaths and can last up to 24 hours.
Bleach plus any acid produces chlorine gas. Vinegar is an acid. So are most toilet-bowl cleaners, most descalers, and many tile and grout cleaners. Chlorine gas causes more severe and longer-lasting effects than chloramine and may require medical treatment.
The scale of the problem is not theoretical. CDC’s analysis of 55 US poison centres found 45,550 exposure calls related to cleaners and disinfectants in January to March 2020, increases of 20.4% and 16.4% on the same period in previous years, with bleaches accounting for 62.1% of the increase in cleaner calls. In the same US data set, household cleaning substances are the single most common substance category in poison-centre exposures among children aged five and under, at 9.96% of exposures in 2024 and the top category every year for the past several. Those are US figures and should not be read as Canadian, but the pattern is not going to be different here.

Note the pattern in the first five rows. Only one of them is somebody deliberately combining two bottles. The rest are sequencing and residue accidents, where the two products never met in a container at all.
What should you do if it has already happened?
Act on the assumption that it is worse than it feels, because chlorine and chloramine both irritate before they injure.
- Leave the room immediately and take everyone with you, including pets. Close the door behind you.
- Do not go back in to pour the mixture out, open a window, or tidy up. This is the step that turns a scare into an injury.
- Ventilate from outside the space if you can, by opening a door from the hallway or a window from an adjoining room, then leave it to air.
- Call for advice. Health Canada’s instruction is to “Call a poison centre or your health care provider right away if you suspect someone has been harmed.” In British Columbia that is the BC Drug and Poison Information Centre.
- Call 911 for shortness of breath, chest pain, persistent coughing, or if anyone becomes drowsy or confused.
- Do not attempt to neutralise anything. Adding a third product to the first two is how a bad situation gets worse.

Which mixtures are just pointless?
Some of the most repeated DIY recipes online are not hazardous, they simply do not work. Worth knowing, because they waste time that could have gone into scrubbing.
Vinegar plus baking soda. This is an acid meeting a base. Acetic acid donates a proton to bicarbonate, and you get sodium acetate (a salt), water and carbon dioxide, which is the fizz. As one chemist put it in The Conversation, the result “is not any different from just adding the same amount of table salt to some water and then using that to clean”. The mechanical agitation of the fizz can help loosen debris in a drain if it happens in place and immediately, but the liquid left behind is not a cleaner. Do not store the mixture in a sealed bottle: carbon dioxide builds pressure.
Vinegar plus castile soap. The acid unsaponifies the soap, converting it back into free fatty acids. What comes out of the bottle is a whitish, curdled, oily film that cleans worse than either ingredient used alone. This is one of the most common DIY recipe errors online, and it is straightforward acid and base chemistry rather than anything exotic. Use the soap, rinse, then use the vinegar if you need an acid.
Essential oils added to make a DIY disinfectant. No home-mixed essential-oil preparation is a registered disinfectant in Canada. There is no established consumer dose, no validated contact time and no stability data, and essential oils are not water-soluble, so they do not even distribute evenly in a spray bottle. Bleach added to an enzyme cleaner. Enzymes are proteins, and bleach denatures them, as do strong acids, strong alkalis and high heat. You have paid for two products and disabled one of them.
How do you set a cupboard up so this cannot happen?
Storage and habit, not vigilance. Nobody mixes chlorine gas on purpose, and telling people to be careful has clearly not worked.
- Keep bleach on a different shelf from every acid, physically separated. Toilet cleaner, descaler, rust remover and vinegar all count as acids.
- Own fewer products. Most homes need a detergent, an acid descaler, a scouring agent and, if the household genuinely needs one, a single disinfectant carrying a Health Canada DIN. That is four bottles, and none of the dangerous pairs above can occur among them if the descaler and the disinfectant are stored apart.
- Rinse and dry between products on the same surface, every time. Residue is the usual culprit.
- Never use bleach on pet accidents or litter areas. Urine is an ammonia source.
- Lock the cupboard. Health Canada’s advice is to keep household chemicals locked away and out of reach and sight of children and pets, and it names laundry packets specifically as attractive to children.
- Keep everything in its original labelled container. A decanted bottle is a bottle nobody can identify in a hurry, and the first-aid statement lives on the original label.

Do not go back to finish the job or to tidy up. Health Canada's guidance is to call a poison centre or your health care provider right away, and call 911 for breathing difficulty or chest pain.
Can I mix hydrogen peroxide and vinegar?
Not in a shared container. Combining them forms peracetic acid, which is corrosive and irritating. Using one after the other on a surface, with a rinse in between, is a different matter, but keeping a mixed bottle of the two under the sink is a bad idea.
